Manyame Air Force Base
The AFZ has three Air Bases with differing roles and responsibilities. The Bases are:
- Manyame Air Force Base.
- Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base.
- Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo Air Force Base.
The Base was opened in March 1952 as New Sarum Air Base after its English counterpart in Wiltshire. After Independence the Base was renamed Manyame Air Base and today, provides a full range of services support schools and flying squadrons.
Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base
In 1939, a committee was set up to locate and survey sites in the then Gwelo Area for the establishment of an airfield for the Commonwealth Training Group. Thornhill farm was purchased in 1947 for this purpose.
After independence in 1980, the name Thornhill Air Force Base was not changed. In 2018, the Base was renamed Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base after the first black Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe.
Today, Josiah Tumngamirai Air Force Base it is home to the fighter squadrons, regiment squadrons, the School of Flying Training (SOFT) and an Air Traffic Control (ATC) section.
Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo Air Force Base
Located between Chegutu and Kadoma, the Base was used as a forward operational base before independence and it boasts of a runway and air traffic control tower.
At independence, the Base retained the name Field Air Force Base and was renamed Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo in 2018 after the late liberation fighter and national hero.
The Base is also home to the Recruit Training School, Anti-Aircraft Artillery School, Police and Special Investigations training. A full range of services and amenities support the self-contained base.
